Ivory Coast's leader gets declared winner of presidential election

(MENAFN) Ivory Coast’s President Alassane Ouattara was declared the winner of the country’s presidential election Monday, securing a fourth term with 89.77% of the vote, according to provisional results from the Independent Electoral Commission. Voter turnout was 50.1% of more than 8.7 million eligible voters.

Four candidates challenged Ouattara, with former Commerce Minister Jean-Louis Billon receiving 3.09% and former first lady Simone Gbagbo 2.42%. The Constitutional Council is expected to confirm the final results in the coming days.

Ouattara, 83, removed presidential term limits in 2016 and won his previous election in 2020 with 94% of the vote. His tenure has faced criticism over inequality and the high cost of living, and political tension rose after key opposition figures, including former President Laurent Gbagbo and Tidjane Thiam, were barred from running. Ouattara has pledged to focus on youth welfare, security, and economic challenges.
